The Bruin Health Improvement Program (BHIP) .5 is a 10 week lifestyle change program designed to increase the fitness and thereby the health of the UCLA Employee*. BHIP .5 is a program for those who may be sedentary, looking to lose weight, or not ready to join BHIP OnRamp. It is funded by UCLA and is a tremendous investment in UCLA’s most precious resource: the staff and faculty.

*Must be employed 50% time or more to be eligible to apply for BHIP and/or BHIP.5.

Virtual BHIP.5 Programs - Fall 2022:

NUTRITION & HEALTHY COOKING PROGRAM

A 10-week lifestyle change program that offers comprehensive nutritional education and coaching, live practical cooking classes, meal plans, and weekly nutrition challenges. One live nutrition/cooking/meal prepping session led by the UCLA Teaching Kitchen chef and FITWELL registered dietitian and one live nutrition class are offered each week. BHIP.5 Nutrition Only is appropriate for individuals looking to lose weight, improve their cooking skills & learn to meal prep, develop healthier, more mindful heating habits, and improve overall health. Participants are chosen via a lottery drawing of applications.

Not offered for Fall 2022.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY, NUTRITION & HEALTHY COOKING PROGRAM

A 10-week lifestyle change program that offers low-impact physical activity, live practical cooking classes, nutrition education, meal plans, and weekly challenges. Three live workouts led by certified fitness professionals and one live nutrition/cooking/meal prepping session led by the UCLA Teaching Kitchen chef and FITWELL registered dietitian are offered each week. BHIP.5 is appropriate for individuals who are sedentary or whose primary goals may be to lose weight, increase daily physical activity, enhance cooking skills & learn to meal prep, develop healthier, more mindful eating habits, and improve overall health. Participants are chosen via a lottery drawing of applications.


Program Dates: 9/12/22 - 11/18/22


Class Days/Times:
-Mondays, 5:30-7:00p (Nutrition/Cooking class)
-Tuesdays, Thursdays & Fridays 5:30-6:30p (Workout classes)

Plus 30 min 1:1 sessions with a registered dietitian!

Location: Virtual classes via Zoom

Deadline to apply was 8/29/22. Lottery results were sent on 8/31/22.

Equipment requirements will be discussed at orientation.

Minimum equipment: One resistance tube with handles (medium resistance) and a set of dumbbells (light/medium).

Recommended equipment: A variety of resistance tubes with handles (see examples here), one or more resistance loop(s) (see examples here), and 2 or more pairs of dumbbells (light/medium/heavy)

Note for applications: UCLA ID: This ID is displayed on BruinCards or employee badge. UCPath ID: Your UCPath ID can be found by logging into the UCPath portal. The ID number will be displayed in the top left box under your name. It can also be found on UCPath paychecks or paystubs.

Important Information:

In-person program: There is a $150 repeat fee for individuals who have participated in at least four weeks of the program and who wish to repeat BHIP.5.

Virtual program: There is a $40 repeat fee for individuals who have participated in at least four weeks of the program and who wish to repeat BHIP.5

Graduate Student Employees (at 50% time or more) are eligible to apply for BHIP and/or BHIP.5.

Bruin Health Improvement Program (BHIP) Onramp: Strength and Conditioning

BHIP OnRamp

The Bruin Health Improvement Program (BHIP) OnRamp is a 12 week long strength and conditioning program, exclusively for UCLA faculty and staff* at no cost, offering participants intensive lifestyle training in areas of exercise, nutrition, stress management and mental conditioning. BHIP OnRamp is a comprehensive conditioning program that will improve cardiovascular fitness and overall strength and mobility. It is appropriate for individuals without current limitations and those looking to become much more physically active and nutritionally mindful.

*Must be employed 50% time or more to be eligible to apply for BHIP and/or BHIP.5.

BHIP OnRamp - Fall 2022:

A 12-week health improvement program designed for individuals looking to learn proper exercise technique, start/improve a regular resistance training program, and increase strength & overall fitness. Enjoy live workouts led by certified fitness professionals three times per week and improve eating habits with a 30 Day Nutrition Challenge. BHIP is appropriate for individuals who are generally active, but looking to add regular resistance training, and create sustainable nutrition habits to help reach their overall health goals. A virtual class time is offered for those who prefer to participate virtually via Zoom.

A virtual 7:00a class will be offered on MWF, an in-person class will be offered at 12:00p, 5:15p, or 6:20p on MWF, and an in-person class will be offered at 4:00p on TuThF. Participants are chosen via a lottery drawing of applications. Participants will be assigned one class time. BHIP OnRamp graduates can join the BHIP Ongoing Program.

Program Dates: 9/12/22 - 12/2/22

Class Options:

  • 7:00-8:00a on Monday, Wednesday & Friday (virtual via Zoom)
  • 12:00-1:00p, 5:15-6:15p, OR 6:20-7:20p on Monday, Wednesday & Friday ( In-Person at Drake Stadium)
  • 4:00-5:00p on Tuesday, Thursday, & Friday ( In-Person at Drake Stadium)

Bruin Health Improvement Program (BHIP) Ongoing - Virtual and In Person

As a BHIP graduate, you have the opportunity to continue what you've learned in BHIP Onramp with BHIP Ongoing. You are eligible to enroll or re-enroll in BHIP Ongoing at any time.

Virtual & In-Person BHIP Ongoing Winter 2023 info coming soon

BHIP Winter 2023 offerings will go on sale on 12/12/22.

Virtual BHIP Ongoing - Fall 2022

Virtual BHIP Ongoing is available only for BHIP OnRamp Graduates or by approval of BHIP Coordinator. Virtual BHIP Ongoing Fall 2022 includes access to LIVE classes offered two days/week (Tu/Th) at 7a, 12p, or 5:30p via Zoom! Classes start 9/19!

Cost: $90/quarter, Registration opens on September 12th at 12p on the UCLA Recreation online store.

In-Person BHIP Ongoing - Fall 2022

In-person BHIP Ongoing is currently available for BHIP Graduates of in-person BHIP Onramp classes or by approval of BHIP Coordinator. BHIP Ongoing includes access to in person classes at Drake Stadium, virtual classes, and a Rec membership, including access to all available facilities .

Current Class Offerings: M, Tu, W, Th at 6:10a, 7:15a, 11:00a, 5:15p, 6:20p and an additional 12:05p class on Tu, Th and a 4:00p class on M, W.

BHIP PRD is $60/month. If you are not interested or do not qualify for PRD, you can buy the quarterly membership for $180/quarter. The Fall 2022 quarterly membership is on sale starting 9/5/22. PRD policies are posted on the Member Service website.

BHIP Ongoing: Fee increase set for January 1, 2023

Beginning January 1, 2023, BHIP Payroll Deduction will cost $65/month. BHIP Quarterly Membership will cost $195/quarter.

BHIP winter 2023 quarter membership will go on sale on 12/12/22. Purchase a winter 2023 quarter membership between 12/12 - 12/31 to receive one more quarter at the current rate before prices increase.
